I dunno.
Unless I was on a straight stretch of road for long periods of time cruise control would not be my SOP, especially in your end of town Larry. Those Western MD hills can be very challenging!
It took me some time to figure out that taking off the OD was the way to go even though the engine/transmission sounds like it is pushing sometimes.
I am also a believer of maximizing speed whenever possible, i.e. down hills or open roadway 'cause ya know eventually you will get jammed up and have to start all over again. During those moments I will take the OD off and allow the transmission to take a break.
Of course if I did not take everything I 'think' I might need in the ROO I could probably travel lighter, faster and save more gas!
I too have a 12' street with cars on both sides whenever I leave or return from camping. It is always a challenge. The 90 degree backing in moments can be a bit hairy especially when some fool is trying to get down the street and lacks patience.

No pics but my hose is easily 1"-2" outside the grill.
Since I have had the cover off several times I know it is doing just fine.

RE: Super slide stops?
There has been some animated discussion in the past about the transit bars.
Some trailer slide motors have mechanisms which prevent the slide from moving during transit. Others perhaps need the bars more.
However, I am of the 'proper planning beats poor performance' and 'an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure' idealogy.
I do not want to be going down the road and observing my slide in the fast lane of opposing traffic although I do think I would know it was happening but by then it could be too late.
As far as young ones activating the slide, that is always a possibility with or without the bars in. I know I have rushed around once or twice and forgot what step I was on before I hit the switch. Heck if there were no bars in but the trailer was right next to a pole the outcome may not be good either.
It is all about choices.
